AUTO BIOGRAPHY: Ford F-750 is one huge land machine
The Providence Journal / Sandor Bodo
WEST WARWICK Frank Zoglio has always driven big trucks, partly because he grew up with them in the family business and partly because he is an avid outdoorsman.
Two years ago he bought a 2006 Ford F-750 XL Super Duty truck from Truck Customs by Chris, a Georgia-based company that customizes large trucks that is owned by Chris Walker.
“It’s got so much stuff on it I don’t know where to begin,” Zoglio said during a recent interview. “It’s an incredible machine customized with everything I need.”
Certainly the truck is huge, weighing in at 26,000 pounds (13 tons) with massive 22.5 inch wheels and air brakes. It’s powered by a 300-horsepower Caterpillar 7.2-liter diesel engine with 860 pound-feet of torque and is armed with an Allison 6-speed automatic transmission with double overdrive and air brakes.
Zoglio said the engine has a 500,000-mile warranty and the transmission has a 400,000-mile warranty. He said he used to own a Humvee, but found the 100,000 mile warranty limited.
“After 100,000 miles, the expenses come back at you,” he said.
The cabin is equipped with a screen for a rear view camera and a separate navigation screen. The seats are leather and Zoglio said the ride is smooth, courtesy of air-ride front seats and suspension airbags in the rear of the truck.
He said he has put some 90,000 miles on the truck, driving it all over New England and into Eastern Canada in pursuit of his passions for bird hunting, canoeing and fishing. (He has also taken sporting trips to Cornwall in the southwest of England and to Slovenia.)
He said that the truck has a two-wheel “over the road” drive because the ride is smoother than a four-wheel “off-road” drive.
Zoglio said he gets 12-to-15 miles per gallon, with the two 107-gallon fuel tanks giving him a range of around 2,500 miles. Dual vertical exhaust pipes allow him to drive through four feet of water.
Towing capacity is 15,000 pounds and the payload is 16,000 pounds. Zoglio uses it to haul his canoes and a Ridge Runner he carries for extreme off-road travel. The bed tilts down to load and unload the smaller vehicle.
Zoglio, 62, who is married with two grown children and two grandchildren, grew up in Providence and now lives in Jamestown.
He grew up in the family business, Zoglio Paper Company, a distribution company, learning to drive delivery trucks at a young age.
He said he has always owned big pickups for his personal use, including Dodge and Ford “Dually” trucks, which have a heavier payload than regular pickups and four wheels on the rear axle.
Having sold the family business in 1999, Zoglio said he is basically retired but has a small paper packaging brokering business and retains an office and work schedule.
“You can’t retire and not do anything,” he said.
Zoglio said he fishes for trout and salmon and hunts pheasants, partridge, chukars (Hungarian partridge) and geese.
Indeed, he had just returned from a morning of goose hunting in Portsmouth prior to the interview and was dressed in warm outdoor gear while his black Labrador, Bugsy, lay outside the door to his office.
He said she was tired after the morning’s hunt, in which she had retrieved a couple of birds. He said he and his hunting party had shot four geese and debreasted them for eating later.
“We could have shot more, but we only shoot what we eat,” he said. As a bird hunter, Zoglio said he is conservation-minded and a member of Greenpeace.
Indeed, Chris Walker said he would be contacting Zoglio in the New Year with an offer to upgrade his truck with an HHO package that would convert it to a diesel-hydrogen hybrid.
He said the technology can reduce carbon emissions by 60 percent while increasing horsepower and torque.
“I’ll be e-mailing 900 people,” said Walker from Georgia in a phone interview, adding that he expected Zoglio to be interested because of his concern for conservation.
“Sure, no question,” said Zoglio when asked of his potential interest in such an upgrade, adding that Walker “is always keeping me up on everything.”
Walker said his company customizes around 150 trucks a year, with sales currently split between the United States and overseas.
“Right now we have a truck going to Scotland, another to Argentina, another to Dubai and another to Saudi Arabia,” he said.
Walker’s background is in his family’s contracting business. He customized his first truck in 2000 and his upgrades include making the trucks capable of higher speeds on the highway..
He said his customers include athletes (the truck he created for Shaquille O’Neal is featured on his Web site www.f650supertruck.com) and film stars who “use them when they are in the mood,” as well as everyday drivers and outdoorsmen.
Indeed, Zoglio’s truck is modest by comparison to others at the company’s Web site, with some sporting six doors, six fuel tanks and exotic paint jobs.
Zoglio said he used to take regular trips involving both white-water kayaking and canoe camping with a core of about 10 of his former employees.
“I believe in working hard and playing hard,” he said, noting the group would take about six trips a year for 10 years. Nowadays, he said he mostly canoe camps.

1994 80 Series Toyota Land cruiser formerly known as Siggibilt.
The truck was one of the first 80 series 4.2l turbo diesel auto-trans LCs imported into Australia. It was actually used by Toyota Australia for press testing. At the time, I was living in Australia, and wanted to introduce the Australian 4X4 community to Icelandic modifications. To this end, I translated the Icelandic regulations and presented them to the New South Wales (NSW) Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), along with images of Icelandic vehicles that were similarly modified. I also presented my ideas to Toyota Australia, as at that time most 44" modified search and rescue vehicles were based on the 80 series LC.
The RTA were less than enthusiastic about my ventures, but Toyota Australia more so. They "lent" me the vehicle initially under some product development scheme. With a project vehicle secure, I got in touch with Toyota Iceland, P. Samuelsson, who now have a separate division for vehicle modifications called Arctic Trucks. They provided me with the fender flares and auxiliary hydraulic ram for the steering, plus some modification outlines.
Norm Needham, then owner of Traction4, a four wheel drive shop in NSW, allowed me to stick the truck into the back of his shop, and helped me carry out the modifications. All through the project, Norm, a veteran in the Australian 4X4 industry, was certain that I would never get the vehicle registered.
The regulations for vehicle modifications in Australia are very strict, but Australia has a local auto industry. For this industry there is a complete set of regulations called the Australian Design Rules (ADR). This is what I used. I hired an Automotive Engineer approved by the RTA to carry out ADR inspections. I had him test all aspects of the vehicle that were affected by the modifications. He carried out noise tests, and most importantly brake tests with a fully laden vehicle in order to certify that the additional wheel size would not affect emergency braking or brake fade. All the tests were passed within regulation. This was written up in an Engineers report that I still have a copy of. With this in hand, I went to an inspection station and got the vehicle registered. I believe it is the only legally registered 44” modified 4X4 in Australia to date.
With the vehicle registered, my product development project was completed, and I purchased the vehicle from Toyota Australia. The truck was very popular at Australian motor shows and was exhibited at quite a number of them.
When I left Australia the vehicle was purchased by Fred Smith, owner of Out of Town 4WD in NSW, a manufacturer of auxiliary water and fuel tanks. He later sold the vehicle to Terry Smith, owner of Exclusive Tyres in Queensland, importer of Cooper and Mickey Thompson tyres in Australia. As far as I know, Terry still owns the vehicle and uses it for long trips into the Australian outback.
After The North Pole, Hilux Heads South To Antarctica
After making record breaking journey last year - being the first car to reach the Magnetic North Pole with the three stooges from Top Gear (more like two as "Hamster" Hammond went on a dog pulled sleigh), the Toyota Hilux again made headlines by driving across Antarctica to the South Pole.
According to press materials, the Hilux-es were used as support vehicles for Amundsen Omega3 South Pole Race, a 483-mile skiing challenge celebrating the historic rival expeditions of explorers Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott. It also mentions the advantages of Hilux over traditional favourites in traversing snow terrains - belt tracked snowcats, which are slower, uses more fuel and are less comfortable.
Four units of Hilux were used for this momentous journey, each of them covered more than 2000 miles each (over 3,200km) in temperatures below -30C. All four of them were of the 3.0-litre diesel double-cab variant, heavily modified by the Artic Truck who were also responsible for the Top Gear North Pole Challenge Hilux.
Artic Truck is a 4x4 modification and conversion specialist in Iceland. They are an affiliated company with the Toyota distributor in Iceland, which also explains their choice of vehicles. Artic Truck now operates independently from Toyota, but it is obvious from their website that Toyota SUVs and trucks remain their choice of base vehicles to start from.
Some very significant modifications were made to the Hilux-es, among them fitment of 44-inch tires, reinforcing the drivetrain and suspension. To accommodate the gigantic tires, the front suspension had to be moved 4cm down, 5cm forward and lifted by another 5cm. Fenders also had to be cut and larger parts of the body had to be rebuilt. The rear suspensions were moved back 16cm and lifted 10cm. On the drivetrain, a 100% differential lock are fitted on both front and rear axles, while an additional crawler gear is installed. Current 4x4 Low ratio is already for extremely slow crawling speed so one has to wonder who much slower must the crawler gear be, to pull a 2-ton supply trailer.
Very little is mentioned on the engine modifications, other than fitment of a "special device" to melt snow while on the move using the engine's heat.

More photos and videos can be found here.
Closer to home, the local Toyota distributor UMW Toyota Motor have also provided 4 units of Hilux for use as support vehicles in the 2008 Rainforest Challenge, an international 4x4 event which many avid off-roaders now perceive it to be the new "Camel Trophy Challenge" which made Land Rovers a household name for 4x4. After more than 2 decades, the Camel Trophy have evolved to be more of an atheletic event and less of a man-machine event. In its place as the pinnacle of 4x4 challenge is the Rainforest Challenge.
And please don't come down too hard on Louis. He is a really nice chap, an avid off-roader and not a TV personality. The reality is that corporate sponsorhip is critical for the success of such large scale events. There is nothing quite wrong in giving some product endorsement to corporations in return for their financial support. Personally, I would like to see greater involvements of makes like Isuzu, whose D-Max is a seriously under-rated truck. Truth is that there really isn't much of a difference from one truck to another truck, as all 4x4 trucks have to be modified and adapted for use in the muddy rough and tumble world of 4x4 motorsports. No standard truck can survive in those environment. What is more critical is having the right tires, support equipment and a good driver co-driver team. The vehicle is a secondary issue. A properly prepared old banger 2 decade old Daihatsu Rocky can easily keep up with the latest Hilux in the rainforest. The key word here is vehicle planning and preparation. It is easier to modify / build a car for a very focused application and type of usage, compared to designing a car that have to meet a multitude of needs (i.e. on-road comfort and off-road performance). So whatever can be done by the Hilux, I am quite sure it can be replicated by its next nearest competitor.
Toyota Hilux Performance Showing in Antarctica
According to reports from Top Gear, they have sent crews to the Toyota Hilux to Antarctica. The purpose of the Toyota Hilux delivery to Antarctica is to show the world that is able to master the pickup vehicle traveling along the 2858 miles traveled in the most southern benia this Earth. Even during the trip kendaraa Toyota Hilux must be able to cope with extreme weather with a temperature of 68.8 degrees Fahrenheit with an altitude over 11,000 feet. eXtreme Toyota Hilux / Tacoma pickup in Top Gear’s polar expedition
Top Gear is said to be the world’s highest production costing automotive TV show and damn right it is. Watch the ‘polar challenge’ episode if you think otherwise. Its a 400 mile expedition from ‘Resolute’ a north Canadian town to the north pole in a Toyota Hilux pick up truck.
more pics of this Toyota Hilux after the jump.
At first I thought who’d wanna watch a couple of grumpy old geezers trying to do what has never been done before. But then I went ahead, moved my lazy bum and watched it. Gotta give it to them, the episode was rivetingly hilarious.
Its a race between Jeremy Clarkson and James May driving a Toyota Hilux/Tacoma pick up truck and Richard Hammond on a sledge pulled by 10 husky dogs. After watching the episode, I couldn’t help but feel Hammond had to endure more than our Jeremy & James duo. Nevertheless this is a superbly made installment, which in every way lives upto its production standards. The visuals were stunning and I liked the soundtrack, especially the one from ‘Requiem for a Dream’. For some reason, every time I listen to it, this track always gives me a Goose skin, but thats a different story altogether.
What grabbed me more than anything else was the Toyota Hilux / Tacoma pickup truck they used. Maan! look at it… if it could kill… all the polar bears that come its way will be eaten to extinction. The first things that seize our attention are the massive 38-inch tyres housed in those bulged out ‘bigger than Arnies’s lats’ flared wheel-arches. These coupled with the heavy duty winch up front and not to forget the shotgun hanging out at the back of the truck, gives it an image that screams out its 4WD seriousness.
Enroute, the Icelandics claim it impossible to pass in a car, is something called a boulder field with terrain so unforgiving that it would rip out the truck’s under-body parts. With the temperatures reaching a dick-freezing -65°C, a lot of things like the truck’s mechanical parts could go wrong. Heck, even the fuel in the tank’d be frozen at those temperatures.
To defeat these extreme conditions, the Hilux has been fitted with parts like heavy duty locking differentials, thick skid plates, fuel heaters etc. The mods have been done by ‘Arctic Trucks’ a company that specializes in prepping 4WDs for extreme conditions. Here’s the list of mods if you are interested.
- Studded snow tires of 38 inches in diameter on 15 inch arctic trucks aluminium wheels replace the standard 255/65 R16 wheels and run at pressures as low as 4psi to give good flotation over snow. Two valves per wheel.
- Heavy duty winch mounted on a heavy duty bulbar with lifting points.
- Xenon auxillary driving lights for areas with bad visibility.
- Arches flared by 30cm to protect the tires.
- standard 169bhp 3.0 D-4D engine modified for ultra-low air temperatures.
- Extra coolant added to boost coolant temperature before start-up together with fuel heaters and a heavy duty battery.
- Fat 5mm aluminium skid plates protect the bumper, suspension, transmission and transfer case.
- The position of the front suspension was moved 50mm towards the ground, then moved forward 40mm.
- Lots of kits including shovels, pry-bars, jacks, towing strap, tool kits, first aid kits and a chain saw.
- Locking front and rear diffs modified to cope with the cold.
- Special exhaust, raised air intakes and an extra 90-litre fuel tank to increase the total capacity to 170-litres.
- Shotguns were carried for protection against polar bear attack.
I can’t just stress enough in writing, how much you need watch this episode in Hi-Def. ahem… If only you could somehow get your hands on one.
If you still haven’t figured out how to watch the Hi-Def version,
here are the lower quality ones from youtube

Modif Toyota Fortuner V A/T 2010, 3-Ways Implan Speaker
“Buat x-over pasif mid plus high cutting 315 Hz dengan slope 12 dB/Octave. Kalau midbass main x-over aktif 56 Hz 12 dB/Octave,” ungkap Kimbun.
Modif Toyota Land Cruiser VX-R, Sepatu Roda Lumpur
Namun bila pembungkus pelek 24 inci berupa ban pacul alias mud terrain (MT) yang lazim dipakai off-road, barangkali baru TLC VX-R ‘Limited’ milik Doli Hutasuhut.
BODY-LIFT KIT
Seperangkat suspension kit buatan Old Man Emu diborong dari Australia. Mulai sokbreker setir heavy duty, sokbreker nitrogen, per keong dan stablizer hingga body-lift kit dirakit berbarengan agar tinggi bodi bertambah 5 inci.
Modif Toyota Harrier, Hidden Agenda
Out of the box, dan saya rasa ini worth it untuk dimiliki.
Sedan but SUV”.
But hey, “This is going to be my risk,” ujar Ryan.
Velg Modulare M7 24x(9,5+10) inci, ban Pirelli PZero Nero 255/30R24, suspensi Tein Super Flex Damper Adjustable, rem Z Mevius by Project Mµ, piggyback Unichip Q, body kit Gialla Sportive, front grille Gialla, exhaust Exclusive Zeus Mk.2 by 5Zigen, side mirror cover Wald, head unit Alpine F1 Status 7990R, speaker depan Alpine F1 3-way + power McIntosh MC444, speaker belakang Dynaudio Esotec 2-way, subwoofer Phase Linear Aliante, power MacIntosh MCC404 A, power monoblok Xtant 1001, video distribution amplifier SoundstreamVA700, kabel speaker/power/RCA Euphoric Wires
